Antibiotic injection fights superbugs

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed an intravenous injection to fight hospital superbugs (bacteria resistant to most current antibiotics). They used nanotechnology to develop an injected form of mupirocin – which previously was just an antibiotic ointment. … Continue reading

The first new antibiotic in 3 decades

Israel’s Regina Barzilay co-led an MIT team that used artificial intelligence to discover Halicin – the first entirely new antibiotic molecule in 30 years. It kills two of the most dangerous and durable bacteria which (unlike with other antibiotics) were … Continue reading

Custom-tailored antibiotics

I reported previously (23rd Feb) on the AI system devised at Israel’s Technion for identifying the right antibiotic and dose for curing an individual’s infection. Now, thanks to the KSM Institute of Israel’s Maccabi Health company, the system is getting … Continue reading

Fast test to identify the right antibiotic

I’ve reported previously (see here) on the many Israeli innovations that are trying to prevent antibiotics from becoming ineffective. Now Israeli startup Nanosynex offers a 4-hour test to determine which antibiotic will be effective and what dose to use to … Continue reading

Reducing overuse of antibiotics

I reported previously (see here) on Israel’s MeMed which has developed ImmunoXpert – a fast test to determine whether an infection is bacterial or virus. ImmunoXpert is now EU approved and a recent study shows it can reduce unnecessary antibiotic … Continue reading

Just enough antibiotics

Hebrew University researchers are working on preventing the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They are analyzing the concentrations of antibiotics and their timescales for destroying bacteria, to optimize treatment regimens and avoid the under / over-treatment of infections. https://www.youtube.com/embed/KaxB3bHuKUY?rel=0

Bacteria sleep to evade antibiotics

Biophysicists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have found that bacteria go dormant to prevent being killed by antibiotics.  This process also helps the bacteria develop faster resistance and suggests that resistance can be prevented by targeting dormant bacteria with … Continue reading

Switching off antibiotic resistance

Researchers at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have found new RNA-control switches (“ribo-switches) for genes encoding antibiotic resistance and discovered that these switches are actually “turned on” by the antibiotics themselves.  The switches could be turned off by future treatments. http://wis-wander.weizmann.ac.il/life-sciences/switching-antibiotic-resistance
