Busting the protein link to Alzheimer’s

Israeli biotech MemoryPlus has developed a peptide to block the interaction of proteins PTEN & PSD-95, that causes memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients. The disease makes excessive PTEN, which attacks PSD-95, weakening the brain’s synapses. The peptide also lowers PTEN … Continue reading

Protein could reverse Alzheimer’s damage

A protein discovered by a Tel Aviv University research team may reverse the damage caused by Alzheimer’s. Laboratory tests showed that TAU (tubulin-associated unit) restored levels of the dementia-protecting protein NAP. It also restored disease-shrunken brains to normal size. http://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-discovery-could-reverse-alzheimers-damage/

Breakthrough brain research

Israeli scientists have published a peer-reviewed paper that identifies the dendrites in the brain’s neurons as the learning center of the brain, rather than currently regarded synapses. It could help develop new types of treatments for degenerative diseases, such as … Continue reading

Slowing dementia

Tel Aviv University scientists have made progress in developing a treatment using the NAP peptide to counter Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions (see here previously). Their new compound dramatically decreased the excessive buildup of the protein tau, which misfolds in … Continue reading

Prospective treatment for children with autism

In her lab, Professor Illana Gozes of Tel Aviv University (reported here previously) repaired live but damaged brain cells taken from deceased Alzheimer’s patients and an autistic child. It showed that her experimental NAP peptide could be used to treat … Continue reading

Stopping nerve cell death in the brain

Tel Aviv University Professor Illana Gozes has made yet another discovery (see previous) about the gene fragment NAP and its potential to treat Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases. NAP stops abnormal Tau proteins from tangling the microtubules that maintain the … Continue reading

New peptide may cure brain diseases

(Thanks to NoCamels.com) Professor Illana Gozes of Tel Aviv University has created a new peptide (short protein) called NAP that latest trials indicate could treat neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, ALS or Parkinson’s. http://nocamels.com/2013/07/new-study-may-may-help-lead-the-way-to-treatment-for-neurodegenerative-diseases/

Studying brain function in a petri dish

Ya’ara Saad, a PhD student at Tel Aviv University, has been growing neuron networks from fruit flies in the laboratory. By measuring electrical activity and synapse development, she is building a platform for testing potential treatments for neuro-degenerative diseases such … Continue reading
