The first new antibiotic in 3 decades

Israel’s Regina Barzilay co-led an MIT team that used artificial intelligence to discover Halicin – the first entirely new antibiotic molecule in 30 years. It kills two of the most dangerous and durable bacteria which (unlike with other antibiotics) were … Continue reading

Breakthrough in fighting resistant bacteria and cancer

Researchers at Israel’s Ben Gurion University have used Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and AI to design new antibiotics and treatments for RNA viruses responsible for diseases such as hepatitis, HIV and many cancers. https://unitedwithisrael.org/breakthrough-israeli-screening-method-could-lead-to-new-cancer-treatments-antibiotics/

Fighting MRSA resistance

As reported (here) previously, Israel’s Biomica is developing microbiome therapies for antibiotic resistant bacteria. It is now partnering with the Weizmann Institute to develop a selective treatment against MRSA – antibiotic resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus infection. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/biomica-to-collaborate-with-weizmann-institute-of-science-to-develop-a-selective-treatment-against-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-300943752.html https://www.biomicamed.com/

Fast test to identify the right antibiotic

I’ve reported previously (see here) on the many Israeli innovations that are trying to prevent antibiotics from becoming ineffective. Now Israeli startup Nanosynex offers a 4-hour test to determine which antibiotic will be effective and what dose to use to … Continue reading

Just enough antibiotics

Hebrew University researchers are working on preventing the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They are analyzing the concentrations of antibiotics and their timescales for destroying bacteria, to optimize treatment regimens and avoid the under / over-treatment of infections. https://www.youtube.com/embed/KaxB3bHuKUY?rel=0

Bacteria sleep to evade antibiotics

Biophysicists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have found that bacteria go dormant to prevent being killed by antibiotics.  This process also helps the bacteria develop faster resistance and suggests that resistance can be prevented by targeting dormant bacteria with … Continue reading

Clues to defeating resistant bacteria

Scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have discovered some surprising characteristics of bacteria.  When phage-resistant bacteria are in close contact with phage-sensitive bacteria, the resistant bacteria lose their resistance. The discovery could help research into antibiotic resistance. http://new.huji.ac.il/en/article/33384 https://www.youtube.com/embed/YQLvTBCsOtM?rel=0

A virus that kills resistant bacteria infections

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have isolated (from Jerusalem sewage) a “safe” virus EFDG1, which can kill the bacteria infections associated with up to 33% of root canal treatments. EFDG1 eradicates even antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria. http://new.huji.ac.il/en/article/25479

How bacteria fights antibiotics

Researchers from Israel’s Weizmann have uncovered the process that bacteria deploys to remove antibiotics from cells. The discovery sheds new light on the ability of bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance. http://wis-wander.weizmann.ac.il/arms-race
