Protein discovered in cancer that fools immune system

A team led by Weizmann scientists has discovered that the protein PSME4 is produced by cancer cells to stop the immune system from attacking the tumor. Reducing PSME4 levels should potentially render tumors more vulnerable to immunotherapy. https://www.jns.org/israeli-researchers-unmask-how-cancer-camouflages-itself/ https://wis-wander.weizmann.ac.il/life-sciences/dumpster-diving-cancer-tissue-uncovers-immune-evasion-mechanism https://www.nature.com/articles/s43018-023-00557-4

Bacteria can help anti-cancer immune response

There is a complex relationship between bacteria and cancer (reported here previously). Now, scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have discovered that bacteria inside cancer cells can provoke an immune reaction against the tumor, which chemotherapy can further exploit. https://wis-wander.weizmann.ac.il/life-sciences/bacteria-may-aid-anti-cancer-immune-response https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03368-8

Immune response to donor cells can kill cancer

Israeli biotech Immunovative Therapies purifies and cultures healthy T-cells from an unmatched donor. The cells (called AlloStim) are injected into the cancer patient and after several treatments, boosts the recipient’s immune system to kill the tumors. Phase 2/3 trials in … Continue reading

A better cancer immunotherapy treatment

I reported previously (many times) of Israeli scientists who are boosting the body’s immune system to fight cancer. Now Weizmann’s Dr Rony Dahan has developed a cancer immunotherapy compound that is 30 times more effective than existing treatments. http://www.weizmann.ac.il/WeizmannCompass/sections/new-scientists/making-immunotherapy-more-effective

Protein switch helps immune system fight cancer

Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers have developed a protein “switch” that activates the immune system to attack cancer cells. They were able to distinguish cancer cells from healthy tissue by their DNA sequences. http://www.jpost.com/HEALTH-SCIENCE/Joint-Israeli-US-research-distinguishes-cancerous-cells-from-healthy-ones-508738 https://www.youtube.com/embed/vbWDuAev7Oo?rel=0
